This isn’t just a tree.

It’s the Alabama Champion Littlehip Hawthorn 

We are honored to share that our Littlehip Hawthorn (Crataegus spathulata), located right here at Riverview Camp for Girls has been officially designated the Alabama Champion Tree for its species.

This incredible tree was nominated by Dan Green and formally proclaimed by the Alabama Forestry Commission, with recognition from State Forester Rick Oates. Champion Tree status means this is the largest documented Littlehip Hawthorn in the state, measured by height, trunk circumference, and crown spread.

This designation is more than a title. It reflects years of thoughtful stewardship, a deep respect for nature, and a commitment to preserving Alabama’s natural heritage. We’re grateful to care for a living piece of Alabama’s natural history and proud to share this honor with our community. We are beyond excited to celebrate as this living landmark continues to grow on the grounds here at Riverview, inspiring generations to come.
